Brown Rice Sushi

Our latest craze that makes for really fun lunches - homemade Brown Rice sushi!

Lunch + handicraft + fun all rolled into one!
The best thing is, the kids love to eat what they have made, so the food disappears really quickly!

We used the leftover seaweed to cut out an underwater landscape. There's an octopus, shark, cuttlefish, whale, and seaweed!

Ingredients

  • Short grain brown rice + brown rice vinegar, brown sugar molasses, salt
  • Cucumber, pear, avocado, smoked salmon
  • Nori seaweed
  • Japanese mayonnaise
  • Sesame seeds (to make rice balls and maki)
  • Endless creativity!

We watched these videos first before making the sushi:

Far East Organization Children's Garden @ Gardens By The Bay

The children enjoyed the Toddler Play Zone and Water Play area (for older children). There were the usual water jets and fountains that feature in most water play areas like the zoo, Palawan beach, NEX, Changi City Point and Sembawang Shopping Centre. But still, water is water, the the kids loved it all the same!

The husbands watched the children while Cheryl and I relaxed in the Amphitheatre with Covered Canopy. There was lots of sitting room and with the huge ceiling fans, it didn't matter that it was 12 noon!

The Rainforest Tree Houses were undoubtedly the biggest hit. The children disappeared into the treehouses and completely forgot about us, scaling fearful heights and shinnying up poles and ladders. Reminiscent of Robin Hill in the Isle of Wight, the nets, rope bridges, hanging baskets, slides and spinning wheels formed an enchanted forest. I liked the way the play structures were built around the trees, with reinforcement bars to help the branches support the weight of exuberant, bouncy climbers. There were a few friendly, young, uniformed staff stationed at the different play areas to ensure the safety of the children... and also to help spin them on the wheel!

Soon, the children got hungry and having no desire to venture further with wet, hungry children, we bought bento lunch sets from the Children's Garden Cafe just next to the play area, and sat down at the amphitheatre. It was about $6 per set for microwaved frozen food (we had mashed potato with fish and veggies), but it tasted good! There were salads, fruits, snacks, and a good variety of Asian bento meal sets.

When we were sufficiently revived, we took a 5 minute walk to Satay by the Bay. There were plenty of children-sized tables and chairs which were surprisingly comfortable, even for the dads! We don't eat mammals so I can't tell you how the satay tasted, but our friends enjoyed theirs. But the Ghee Thosai was wonderful!
